2. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

3. “Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5).

5. “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34).

10. “’Bring all the tithes into the storehouse… and try Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it’” (Malachi 3:10).

10 Scriptures to Help You Pray Through Grief

God is close to those who grieve.

We may grieve for a friend or family member who has died or a loved one who has strayed. We may mourn the loss of a pet or a job or a prized possession. We may experience grief when our health wanes or a relationship sours. Whatever the source of our pain, the Bible assures us that the Lord “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3 NIV).

When we experience loss, it only hurts more to ignore it or deny it; healing comes when we acknowledge and express what we’re feeling. While it’s therapeutic to talk to friends and counselors, there’s no one better to hear our sorrows than our gracious, compassionate and loving Lord.

There’s also no better way to pray through our grief than with the words of Scripture, allowing God’s own words to flow through our minds and hearts. Here are 10 scriptures that anyone can pray through grief:

1)  2 Samuel 12:23
“I will go to him, but he will not return to me” (2 Samuel 12:23 NIV). Or turn it around to heighten the promise in the verse: “He (or she) will not return to me, but I will go to him (or her).”

2)  Psalm 31:9
Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief (Psalm 31:9 NIV).

3)  Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 NIV).

4)  Psalm 73:21-26
When my heart was grieved
    and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever (Psalm 73:21-26 NIV).

5)  Psalm 119:28
My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word (Psalm 119:28 NIV).

6)  Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3 NIV).

7)  Matthew 5:4
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” (Matthew 5:4 NIV).

8)  John 16:22
“Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy” (John 16:22 NIV).

9)  1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
We do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 NIV).

10) Revelation 21:4
“‘[God] will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4 NIV).

These are a mere sample of the many Bible verses that will help a grieving person process and pray through a season of grief. Feel free to print them and pray them as often as necessary, and even add other verses as you encounter them in your Bible reading.

10 Remarkable Women of the Bible

From Eve to Esther to Mary of Nazareth, many women in the Bible have powerful stories.

However, you might be surprised just how little they actually speak. Reverend Lindsay Hardin Freeman from Excelsior, Minnesota, led a study that counted every single word spoken by a woman in the Bible. They discovered that of the 93 women in the Bible, only 49 have names. And in total women only speak 14,056 words. Yet, consider how powerful those words can be.

“I think they have a lot to share with us about what it means to believe, what it means to have faith,” Reverence Freeman told Huffington Post.

In the stories of women in the Bible, we can find courage, strength, and resilience—but also gentle kindness and humility. Perhaps it is the complexity of these women that draw us to them and makes us want to learn more.

“These are ordinary people,” says Ann Spangler, one of the authors of the devotional, Women of the Bible. “They are not that different, emotionally, from us. They respond to God. Sometimes with faith, sometimes with very little faith. For me, that makes scripture even more authentic.”

If you are looking for guidance during a difficult time, or learning to trust the Lord when things are uncertain, these women’s stories can provide you with hope. Discover the background and life lessons of these strong women in the Bible.

10 Reasons to Give Thanks to God

When the Pilgrims celebrated their first Thanksgiving in 1621, half their original group had died. Our forebears were able to give thanks, because they focused on God’s goodness and mercy even in the midst of trials.

Perhaps they took a lesson from Paul and Silas who, while in chains in the prison at Philippi, “prayed, and sang praises unto God” (Acts 16:25). Or perhaps they were simply following the instruction of Philippians 2:5, which says, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” It was Christ who, knowing exactly what lay ahead, gave thanks on the very night in which He was betrayed.

As Christians, we’re called beyond simple thanks for the good things God has sent our way. We’re also to give thanks for what He has done for us…and for who He is.

Scripture gives us so many examples of why we are to be thankful:

We are to be thankful for what God has given us:

1. His “unfailing love” (Psalm 107, numerous verses)
2. His grace “given you in Christ Jesus”
(1 Corinthians 1:4)
3. Victory “through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
4. His “righteous laws” (Psalm 119:62)
5. The faith of others to sustain and cheer us (Philemon 1:4)

We are to be thankful for what God has done:

6. He has “answered me…[and] become my salvation” (Psalm 118:21).
7. He has redeemed us. “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
8. He has qualified us “to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light” (Colossians 1:12).

We are to be thankful for who God is:

9. “He is good; His love endures forever” (1 Chronicles 16:34).
10. He is “faithful and just” (1 John 1:9).

Training our hearts to give thanks does many good things. It gives credit where credit is due. It keeps us from bitterness, arrogance and discouragement. It protects us from letting our lives be defined by what we don’t have. It keeps us humble and reminds us of our need for God.

10 Fast Facts About the Bible

1. The Bible is inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21).

2. The Bible is made up of 66 different books that were written over 1,600 years (from approximately 1500 B.C. to A.D. 100) by more than 40 kings, prophets, leaders, and followers of Jesus. The Old Testament has 39 books (written from approximately 1500-400 B.C.). The New Testament has 27 books (written from approximately A.D. 45-100). 4. The books of the Bible were collected and arranged and recognized as inspired sacred authority by councils of rabbis and councils of church leaders based on careful guidelines.

5. Before the printing press was invented, the Bible was copied by hand. The Bible was copied very accurately, in many cases by special scribes who developed intricate methods of counting words and letters to insure that no errors had been made.

10 Biblical Reasons to Thank God

Remember the Gospel story of Jesus healing the 10 lepers (Luke 17:11-19)? It’s a wonderful recounting of Jesus’ generous and healing spirit. Nonetheless, it’s a troubling story, because only one of the lepers came back to thank Jesus. How could only one return? How could the other nine dance off in joy, completely forgetting how—and by whom—they were healed?

As Christians, we’re called beyond simple thanks for the good things God has sent our way. We’re also to give thanks for what He has done for us…and for who He is.
